Do You Care About Black People?

Last year Kanye West said that President George W. Bush didn't care about us. On November 7, says NiaOnline editor-in-chief Sheryl Huggins, the question will be: Do you?

Helpless. That's how many of us felt during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when we saw televised images of Black people and other folks waving in desperation from rooftops, languishing in the squalor of the Superdome in New Orleans, and wading in foul floodwaters in search of food and rescue. Many of us felt that musician Kanye West gave voice to that feeling of helplessness when he proclaimed during a live telecast on NBC that "George Bush doesn't care about Black people."

Yet more than a year later, many of Katrina's victims are still struggling to put their lives together, and there are a whole host of other issues affecting Black people--unemployment, fuel prices, the minimum wage, lack of access to high-quality education, the war in Iraq, immigration reform--about which some politicians are counting on our silence. So the question is: Do you care about Black people--enough to vote on Tuesday, November 7, in the midterm elections?

If you do, then show the Democrats, Republicans, and any other party that aspires to lead us that we will hold them accountable for their actions at the polls. This year the Democrats have a serious chance of taking over one or both houses of Congress, and it's up to you to decide whether or not they will. Don't let them take you for granted.

If you're unsure of who's running, where they stand on the issues, where to vote, or other election-related issues, here are a few handy links to check out:
